Conference on Democracy & Freedom in Syria & Syrian Kurdish Human and National Rights

March 13, 2006 - Russell Senate Office Building, Caucus Room

President George W. Bush Said, “The liberty we prize is not America's gift to the world, it is God's gift to humanity”

The Kurdish Front for Promoting Democracy & Freedom in Syria is holding a conference on Democracy and Freedom for All Syrian and Kurdish Human & National Rights in Washington D. C. on March 13, 2006. The purpose of the conference is to explore the opportunities to unite the Syrian Opposition Front to establish through peaceful means a true democratic system in Syria where the human and the national rights of all components and minorities in Syria including the Kurdish nation are recognized. The conference highlights the suffering of the Syrian citizens in general and the horrendous suffering of the Kurdish people in Syria in particular. The story of the plight of the Kurdish people under the brutal regime of the Baath party since they came to power more than four decades ago is long. The Arab belt policy adopted by the Syrian regime in 1962 was and is an ethnic cleansing policy to make the Kurdish villages and towns to be cleared of Kurds and Arabs brought to settle in their places. More than 300,000 Syrian Kurdish citizens are stripped of their citizenship and their rights to own, study, work, marry, drive, travel or even sleeping in hotels are banished. Just recently, a high-ranking Baathist in Syria informed a Kurdish delegation that Syria is a land of Arabs, Assyrian, and Armani, and he did not mention Kurds.

The recent Refugees International in its report, ''Buried Alive: Stateless Kurds in Syria'' considers the long-suffering of the Kurdish nation under the Baath regime in Syria as a threat to the stability in Syria and the Middle East. Further the report calls on the US, the European Union, and the UN to keep up pressure to resolve the Kurdish national & human rights issues in Syria.

The Kurdish Front for Promoting Democracy & Freedom in Syria is cooperating with all oppositions in Syria who believe in democracy and freedom for all.

The conference is sponsored by Kurdish American Committee for Democracy in Syria, Kurdish National Congress of North America (KNC), Kurdish Human Rights Watch (KHRW), and Washington Kurdish Institute (WKI).
